Most of us assume that when we brush our teeth and gums, bacteria is removed and this should lead to good breath. Unfortunately, it does not always work. This is because most of the bacteria are still found on the tongue even after brushing our teeth.

Why Tongue can cause Bad Breath

The tongue is a perfect resting place for anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria feed on food leftovers in our mouths and as they multiply in numbers, they create more and more waste products that produce the foul smell. By only relying on the brushing of teeth, we will not be able to remove these bacteria effectively.

The unfortunate fact is that most individuals out there will pay huge attention to brushing their teeth properly and towards using mouthwashes and even special tooth paste. The problem is that we tend to neglect the tongue. Everybody knows that our teeth need our attention yet few realize that the tongue is also very important and needs our special attention.

Even for those people who will brush their tongue when brushing their teeth, they may find that bad breath can still be present. What actually happens is that in most cases the bacteria present on the tongue is pushed further down at its base and this makes it harder to eventually remove these nasty bad breath causing agents.

The alternative is to use one of the available tongue cleaners (tongue scrapers) on the market. The good news is that they are very cheap so you will not have any problems in purchasing one. Paying $5 is not much if you think about the benefit of having a tongue that is free of your foul breath.

Bad Breath Beyond the Tongue

Getting rid of tongue related bad breath, in most cases, is very easy. On the other hand, there are different circumstances that can be very difficult to deal with. For instance, post nasal drip can easily affect the tongue and create bad breath. If you are suffering from sinusitis or tonsillitis, it is quite easy to develop post nasal drip and your tongue will be provide an even more conducive place for anaerobic bacteria to live in. In such circumstances there is a need to consult a doctor because antibiotics would be needed.
