Want to Prevent Bad Breath? Awareness Is Key
Are you worried that bad breath will stop you from getting a job or meeting a spouse, or cause people to mistake you for a dragon? Bad breath, scientifically known as halitosis, is a multi billion-dollar business. From mouthwashes to tablets, several products are available over-the-counter or with a prescription, and all of them claim to be able to combat and prevent bad breath.
Now, we all learned early in life that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” But, the thing is, before you can prevent bad breath, you should first know what causes it. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash can help to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth. It’s the sulfur compounds that the bacteria release which can cause bad breath.
However, there could be other reasons behind the foul smell. Certain foods, such as onions and garlic, contain strong oils that transfer to your lungs and then move outwards through your mouth. And, just as rotting meat doesn’t smell like a bed of roses, so do untreated cavities result in halitosis. Hypochlohydria, which causes a significant reduction in stomach acid, can also be another reason behind the garlicky stench. So is smoking cigarettes or cigars.
When treating bad breath, it’s important to know what works and what doesn’t. Firstly, while mouthwash commercials often make miraculous claims, consider that they can only temporarily eliminate bad breath, by reducing plaque and killing the bad breath-causing germs.
Are you ready to debunk another odor-related myth? Here’s another one: brushing won’t necessarily prevent bad breath. That’s because many people brush about a quarter of the two minutes needed to clean the teeth’s surfaces. In other words, many don’t brush long or thoroughly enough.
It’s crucial to prevent bad breath before it further cramps your lifestyle. However, it’s equally important to understand what causes halitosis, and why certain treatments often aren’t as effective as you might assume they are.
