Halitosis can have a negative impact on your social, professional, and romantic life. It can put a damper on the most basic of social interactions – talking to a potential client, for example. Does this mean you’re doomed if you have bad breath? Not at all! In fact, you can fight back and eliminate bad breath. There are many ways to do so, and one of the simplest ways out there is simply cleaning your tongue.

Sometimes, it’s not enough to brush your teeth and gums. Moreover, merely brushing your tongue using a toothbrush may not be sufficient. Bacteria that forms on your tongue usually appears white, and can worsen if you have many holes and cracks in your tongue—creating a breeding ground for the bacteria.

You can often find “tongue scrapers” in drug stores, which will help to clean the back of your tongue. The instruments are very easy to use. You don’t really need to use an expensive tongue scraper. For example, besides impressing your friends, an electronics thingamabob for scraping your tongue really isn’t necessary. A basic tongue scraper from the drug store will produce the same results, at a much lower price.

So, are you ready to start scraping? Using short strokes, work from the back of your tongue towards the front. Depending on which scraper you use, you’ll need to scrap the tongue about three or four times, in order to eliminate bad breath.

After scraping the white stuff from your tongue, use the scraper to coat the surface of the tongue. Next, let the toothpaste sit on the tongue for 1.5-2.0 minutes and then clean it off your tongue. You should also use a little toothpaste to thoroughly clean the front of your tongue.

If you want to eliminate bad breath, then start with your tongue. You’ll probably be surprised at how much better your breath can be after removing a little bacteria!
